Koichiro KURITA

Biography

Graduated from Kansei Gakuin University Kobe Japan, Majored in perceptual psychology.

1980 a fateful encounter with the Thoreau’s Walden: moved by the absolute freedom of the spirit and the ability to enjoy harmony with nature, he quit commercial photography and retreated to the countryside from Tokyo to pursue fine art photography.

He has been photographing in the US, since he received a grant from the Asian Cultural Council (part of John D. Rockefeller III Fund) in 1990. For decade, concentrate on photographing project in Lozere France and Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota.

These series named “CHI SUI KI” (Terrasphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere) in which he captures the

mysterious relationship between the three spheres of earth with large Platinum prints on handmade

Japanese paper.

The next series “ Perceiving”, which is based on the ideas of perceptual psychology he

studied in college. His latest project is “Beyond Spheres”, which is inspired by the literature of Henry

David Thoreau. Kurita will attempt to visually explore Thoreau’s philosophy and the relationship

between nature and humans, as contemplated by Thoreau through the landscapes of Mid Atlantic and

New England. Kurita uses the Calotype (Talbotype-paper negative) process, which was invented by

William Henry Fox Talbot, one of the earliest photography pioneers and a contemporary of Thoreau.
