Wada Garou is pleased to present Night — Solitude, a solo exhibition by calligrapher Aki Nakata, opening on June 5, 2026.
 
This exhibition features new works centered on the theme of “night.”
Rooted in the traditions of calligraphy, Nakata gives form to the meanings and emotions embedded in words. Dynamic kanji, quietly poised hiragana, and the delicate diffusion of ink move beyond writing, evoking subtle inner shifts and traces of presence.
 
At times, she makes her own ink from soot and animal glue, creating fine gradations that bring depth and stillness to the surface.
 
Layered color and gently wavering lines suggest a soft dissolution of boundaries.
 
For Nakata, “night” is not the end of the day, but a time when noise recedes and one turns inward — a quiet, pre- verbal sense of ease. Rather than depicting night, she inhabits it.
 
From within this still and concentrated time, another landscape emerges.

Aki Nakata began the study of calligraphy at the age of five and graduated from Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts.
She subsequently founded the Shoka Calligraphy School in Toyonaka, Osaka, where she continues to teach.
Since 2022, she has studied under Shoshu, engaging with the fundamental principles of calligraphy across a broad spectrum, from traditional kanji and kana to contemporary artistic practices.
Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions in Japan as well as in exhibitions in Taiwan, reflecting an expanding international presence.
In addition to commissioned works for corporate clients and logo design, Nakata maintains an active studio practice, with a focus on further presentations both domestically and internationally.
