Wada Garou is pleased to present Colorful Realm of Enchanted Characters, a solo exhibition by Hiroshi Mori, opening on July 3rd, 2026.

Mori has long focused on a technique that references and reconfigures preexisting images, reinterpreting the very process by which subcultures such as pop art and animation are consumed through the medium of painting. By introducing subtle shifts into familiar motifs, he evokes in the viewer a dual sense of both empathy and dissonance.
 
This exhibition brings together the contemporary concept of the “character” with “Kyara”—a fragrant wood prized since ancient times for its sweet aroma—and reinterprets the latter as a symbol of a being imbued with personality and narrative.
 
The title “Colorful Realm of Enchanted Characters” was conceived as an homage to Ito Jakuchu’s "Colorful Realm of Living Beings". Taking as its point of departure the intense vitality and sense of presence that Jakuchu infused into his depictions of animals and plants, the exhibition situates his dazzling colors and decorative sensibility within the context of contemporary visual culture.
 
The plants and animals depicted in these works are not merely anthropomorphized; rather, an alternative vision of life that traverses the realms of nature and fantasy, ornamentation and emotion, and the classical and the contemporary.
 
By reimagining life in the form of “characters,” the exhibition proposes new possibilities for representing plants and animals as “resonant beings” imbued with emotion, memory, and fantasy.
