Wada Garou is pleased to present Once, I was a Nightclub Hostess, a solo exhibition by uxo uxo Bird, on view from August 28.
 
For many years, uxo uxo Bird has believed that painful or sorrowful memories should not be beautified or rewritten. Looking back, the artist feels that before working as a hostess, life was filled with unpleasant experiences that should not be forgotten.
 
After becoming a hostess, however, the artist gained a stable livelihood, formed meaningful relationships with colleagues, discovered beauty in the things women wore, and learned how to navigate relationships with others. Along with these experiences came many joyful and irreplaceable memories that deserve to be remembered.
uxo uxo Bird believes that women who work in public-facing professions possess a mysterious, almost divine power—not because they are inherently extraordinary, but because they can become such figures through the eyes of the viewer. The more difficult the viewer's circumstances, the stronger this power seems to become.
 
This exhibition takes the artist's experience working as a hostess in Ginza as one of its central themes. Since Wada Garou is located in Ginza, the route to the gallery overlaps with the artist's former commute, bringing back memories of those years. Through this exhibition, uxo uxo Bird seeks to depict, as faithfully as memory allows, the women who worked as hostesses.
