Wada Garou Tokyo is pleased to present 笑 Smile a solo exhibition by Aki Nakata. Aki Nakata first encountered calligraphy at the age of five and has lived with it ever since. In her interaction with calligraphy, she mixes the ink herself and is fascinated by the shapes, colours and beauty created by the free blotting of ink. The ink made by the artist's own hands contains her breath and is sublimated into works as if it breathes with her. ARTIST STATEMENT Exploring new styles of calligraphy as an art while learning, loving and inheriting the tradition of calligraphy - this is why I continue to express myself through it. Calligraphy has been one of the elements that has sustained me since I was a child. When I realised that I wanted to live my life for myself and not for someone else, calligraphy became the source of my passion. Realising that we live once and this moment will never come again, my time with calligraphy became irreplaceable. I wish everyone to find their favourite piece and to share their love of art.
PROFILE Aki Nakata began studying calligraphy at the age of five, and graduated from Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts. In 2015, she received a Master's degree in calligraphy and established the Shoka Calligraphy School in Toyonaka City, Osaka. Began working as a professional calligrapher in 2022, studying under Shoshu. She produces calligraphy for sumo supporters' associations, fashion brands, etc., and has also held exhibitions in Japan and abroad. Official Website 笑 Smile 2024, sumi on Xuan paper, H300×W300mm
