A solo exhibition by Nozomu Shinohara

​WADA GAROU TOKYO Lab. is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Nozomu Shinohara.
 
For over 30 years, Nozomu Shinohara has been based in Shigaraki, continuously exploring the possibilities of earth and fire. His theme, "What happens when you melt Shigaraki clay, known for its fire resistance?" leads him to create works that reveal the inherent power of the clay itself. The characteristic colors and irregular contours are the result of a dialogue between human hands, natural forces, and materials. We invite you to experience the new possibilities emerging from the unique qualities of Shigaraki clay and the artist's relentless pursuit.
 

[Artist Statement]
The soils of the American and Chinese continents took hundreds of millions of years to form. In contrast, the fact that Shigaraki clay was formed in just a few million years was a revelation to me. It continues to fill me with the joy of creating pottery that feels as though it is still the latest work being made today.

PROFILE
Nozomu Shinohara (b. 1972 Osaka) based in Shigaraki, using his self-built anagama kiln to explore modern wood-firing techniques. After studying under Nobuo Furutani and completing the glaze course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Research Institute, he became independent in 1999.
 
He has exhibited widely across Japan and was recognized as a Shigaraki ware traditional craftsman in 2007. In 2012, he received the 23rd Shumei Culture Foundation Award and has led workshops at Stanford and Utah State University.
