Wada Garou Tokyo is proud to present a solo exhibition of Shunichi Iwata, My Everyday Life Recorded on T-Shirts.
Iwata received his MFA in printmaking from Tokyo University of the Arts. Using his own T-shirts as plates, he creates unique monotype prints that bring art closer to the viewer. Starting with clothes and bags using the printmaking techniques, he has transformed everything around him into art in a variety of expressive ways, including felting and sculpture. The works, with his unique perspective on the world, as well as their familiarity and a few jokes, seem to be an act of looking at the artist himself, Shunichi Iwata, by capturing the time that has shaped him, the things around him, the people he has been involved with, the places he has visited, and everything about him. ARTIST STATEMENT Season for a change of clothes- I decided to throw away some clothes, and when I open the wardrobe, I see a "Star of the Giant: Hoshi Hyuma" T-shirt and an "Ultraman's Red King" cap, which I used to wear often for a while. When I saw the "Star of the Giant" T-shirt, I suddenly remembered the bookshelf setup I did while wearing that T-shirt. Since I'm not an avid "Star of the Giants" fan, preferring to watch Pacific League baseball, I had little attachment to this Hoshi Hyuma T-shirt (I don't even remember why I bought it). So, the shirt was worn as workwear, for example when installing shelves. The Red King embroidered cap, on the other hand, was my favorite. I used to travel to Sado Island with the cap (partly because the Red King appeared on the "island"), and I used to wait for visitors with this cap on the days when I was present at my exhibitions. Although there is a difference in the feelings, both garments hold memories, and when I look at them, I can recall the events and places I spent time in while wearing them.
