Wada Garou is pleased to present Stars at the Mountain’s Edge, a solo exhibition by Tomoro Kawai, on view from October 2nd.
 
After graduating from the Oil Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts, Kawai studied under Natsuyuki Nakanishi at the university’s Graduate School. While still a student, Kawai began exhibiting and working both in Japan and abroad. In this exhibition, Kawai presents a serene and profound body of work in which ridgelines along the mountains seem to emerge amid the light of the stars.
 
Kawai says that when looking at the accidental variations and unevenness of paint that arise on the canvas, there is a sensation akin to walking along a beach, gazing at the sand and rocky shore. There is a feeling of walking along the boundary between the known and the unknown, accompanied by both the reassurance of what one knows and a sense of unease when encountering things that remain unfamiliar. Kawai also describes the experience as being like riding an aerial vehicle that is flying while searching for somewhere to land, saying, “To paint is to search.”
 
Through softly overlapping colors and the tactile qualities of paint, forms without clearly defined contours emerge. Because there are no distinct boundaries between colors, adjacent hues gradually dissolve into one another, creating a variety of depths within Kawai’s paintings. This exhibition introduces Kawai’s works, in which images emerge through these layers of color and paint.
