Copperplate Prints Exhibition
January 26th — February 10th, 2024
Wada Garou Tokyo Lab. is pleased to present a solo exhibition of copperplate prints by Aya Motomura.
Using the techniques of drypoint and carborundum, her works give the viewer the impression of seeing a simple everyday life spoken by a line. The fine needle and knife movements, the force of the hand, and everything else resonates with what the artist sees and hears, what she imagines, and the voices of her invisible mind, all contained in a single line. Motomura illustrated Miwa Nishikawa's column "Riding on Hakouma" in Bungeishunju magazine from February 2021 to November 2023, with copperplate engravings. This exhibition will feature 23 selected prints from the 34 illustrations in the column, as well as original copperplate engravings. ARTIST STATEMENT When I was in university, I saw copperplate illustrations by artist Ayumi Ohashi, which made me yearn for copperplate engraving and I began to study it. I engrave images on small copper plates (20cm x 13cm) using drypoint and carborundum techniques, filled them with ink, and printed the illustrations on a press. The time I spent making copperplate engravings for the column was like writing a letter with an address, a happy and special time for me. As the issue of the series has continued, my desire to have people actually see the original works has grown. While it is true that illustrations for a column are only as good as the text, as an artist I am very happy to have my own work seen at the exhibition.
