A Solo Exhibition by Seung Lee April 5th — April 27th, 2024
Wada Garou Tokyo is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Seung Lee.
Seung Lee is a mature painter who came to America from Korea when he was 15. Far from his homeland and greatly influenced by the West, he saw in the "bamboo," which certainly stands beautifully in any environment, a strong figure that supports the spirit and aesthetics of Asia. Bamboo is a symbol of strength, flexibility, and health, but it also symbolizes a history that stretches from ancient times to the present. Having experienced both Eastern and Western cultures, Lee's graceful lines depict bamboo, while at the same time, they also reflect his psychological struggles as an immigrant to faraway lands, and this is connected to the great aesthetic that has shaped his work. His works seems to speak of history while upholding diversity. ARTIST STATEMENT To me, creation has become a therapeutic habit more so than trying to create a masterpiece. It is my own personal visual diary: art is life and life is art. Since I came to the US without knowing the language or culture, making art was my way of expressing my thoughts and feelings. Art became a necessary tool for survival for me but in the bigger picture, I want to capture my daily experiences and thoughts as honestly as possible in art that can be timeless. — from the artist interview INFORMATION
